Duncan MacKay is a Nelson based jeweller. He designs forms to enhance the natural patterns and shapes inherent in the materials he works with. One of these materials is the Cook’s Turban shell. It is a mother of pearl coloured local shell with red and green highlights. MacKay cuts, shapes, and sets it into silver as brooches, pendants and rings. A recent native series includes Kawakawa, southern Rata and Tarata, which are formed by hand from pure silver.
Duncan's work reflects the beauty and intricacy found all over New Zealand’s natural environment.
